Meet the 2016 Superyacht Scholarship winners

Zhara Bathe
50m MY Stewardess
"With pride I can say that winning the scholarship has brought me out of debt, whilst still being able to save and enjoy the moment and all the beautiful places we travel to. It has allowed me to be more independent on many levels such as being away from my family and friends and managing my money. Understanding and working with different personalities, along with better time management, organization, communication and sufficiency. I am now more confident in providing the highest quality of service and overall in my ability to achieve anything I put my mind to. It has opened many doorways for my future and I am and will be forever grateful for the opportunity the Superyacht Scholarship has given me.”
Trystan Irwin
50m MY Deckhand / Engineer
"This scholarship has honestly been a massive turning point in my life and I couldn’t have asked for anything more, as it was already so much more than anyone could wish for. I must give thanks to all the sponsors and everyone that was involved for helping me through it all and successfully managing to land my first job as a deckhand. I have now secured my dream job as a Deckhand/ Engineer and I’m really looking forward to the newly opened door and seeing all the new friends and acquaintances I have made along the way. Thank you so much for believing in me and providing me with the most breathtaking, life changing experience I will ever be presented with. I really hope that you can provide another 4 people with the same amazing opportunity next year."
James Benning
50m SY Deckhand
"The Superyacht Scholarship has completely changed my career path. I was an accountant living in London and now I am working on a 50m performance SY getting it ready to sail across to the Caribbean for the winter season. This summer I have cruised around the French Riviera and Italy and have attended the Americas cup and raced in Les voiles du St Tropez regatta. I would like to thank all the sponsors involved in the Superyacht Scholarship Program for their generosity, without them I would not have landed my dream job.”
Matthew Hold
Chef
“The Superyacht Scholarship was amazing; it helped me in many ways and opened the door for great opportunities. Alison Rentoul has been great throughout, with help with my CV and support.  Staying at Debbie’s crew house was great, made lots of contacts and Debbie herself was amazing along with rest of the team. Each and every sponsor helped in many ways and I can’t thank them enough. It gave me a complete insight into yachting and what to expect. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their support over the last few months and look forward to working with them again in the future.”

After a season of experience cheffing on various yachts, Matt has returned to the UK to further his skills in fine cuisine before preparing to return to the yachting industry for the 2017 season.
